Zoom H4essential
The Zoom H4essential is a compact 32-bit float handy recorder designed for filmmaking, interviews, podcasts and music capture, combining built-in X/Y microphones, two XLR/TRS inputs, USB-C audio interface capability and flexible location-ready operation.
The Zoom H4essential is a portable 32-bit float audio recorder built for filmmakers, podcasters, musicians and content creators who need dependable multi-source recording in a compact handheld format. It combines built-in X/Y microphones with professional external inputs, making it suitable for location sound, interviews, ambience capture, live recording and general production audio workflows.
The recorder features advanced 90° X/Y stereo microphones capable of handling sound pressure levels up to 130 dB SPL, alongside two XLR/TRS combo inputs with phantom power and a 3.5mm mic/line input for additional sources such as lavaliers or line-level feeds. This makes it a flexible option for productions that need to record dialogue, atmospheres, music or mixed input setups without carrying a larger field recorder.
With 32-bit float recording and dual A/D converter circuits on inputs 1 and 2, the H4essential is designed to capture clean audio across a wide dynamic range without traditional gain setting. It records WAV files at up to 96 kHz and supports BWF and iXML metadata, making it practical for professional editing and post-production workflows.
The H4essential can also function as a USB-C audio interface for PC, Mac, iOS and Android devices, supporting 4-in/2-out or 2-in/2-out operation depending on mode. A built-in mixer, full-colour LCD screen, onboard speaker and headphone/line output make it easy to monitor and manage recordings both on set and in the field.
For mobile use, the recorder supports microSDHC and microSDXC cards up to 1TB and can be powered by two AA batteries, USB bus power or a 5V portable battery. Optional Bluetooth functionality via the BTA-1 adapter adds remote control and wireless timecode support for more advanced location workflows.
