The unit adds two full-size XLR/TRS combo inputs with 48V phantom power, plus a 3.5mm stereo mini-jack input for additional microphone or audio sources. Sony describes the system as supporting three recording formats, including 24-bit 4-channel recording, making it useful for interviews, documentary work, corporate video, small drama setups and run-and-gun production audio.
Connection to the camera is made through Sony’s Multi Interface Shoe, which provides a digital audio interface without needing separate audio cables or batteries for the handle unit. This keeps the setup compact and reduces cable clutter when working handheld, on a tripod or in small production environments.
The XLR-H1 includes physical switches and dials for input selection, attenuation, low-cut filtering, auto/manual level control and input channel assignment. The Sony FX3 help guide identifies separate controls for INPUT1, INPUT2 and INPUT3, including XLR/TRS inputs, plug-in-power-compatible 3.5mm input, phantom-power options and manual audio level dials.
As a top handle, it also improves low-angle handheld operation and gives additional accessory mounting options. Sony lists three thread holes for connecting accessories such as monitors, recorders, video lights, extension grips, wireless receivers and brackets.
